Commended, Billy Liddon Health and Safety Award: Jane Joseph, Dyfed-Powys Police and Justice Branch

We are in the presence of a former TUC Health and Safety Student of the year at Coleg Gwent!

The Dyfed-Powys Police and Justice branch agrees that health and safety might not have been given the prominence it deserved in the past. All that changed in 2017 and that was down to one woman, Jane Joseph.

Jane was nominated for the post of H&S officer in that year and used a great deal of her own time to build up knowledge and attend training courses so she felt confident in her role.

She has organised workplace reps to feed information to her in a structured way allowing her to investigate issues and raise them with management.

The culture she has introduced has helped empower members to speak out on health and safety issues in the workplace.

The sense of professionalism Jane has brought means Dyfed-Powys police now listen to UNISON’s concerns and Jane sits on the organisation’s strategic H&S group.
